Gate B14, Schiphol. Forty minutes to boarding. You just sorted your eSIM through WhatsApp five minutes ago, and the install link is sitting in the chat. Here is exactly what to do next.
Most guides bury the actual steps under background you did not ask for. Not this one.
First, confirm your phone supports eSIM. iPhone XS and later, Google Pixel 3 and later, Samsung Galaxy S20 and later. Most phones from the last four or five years qualify. On iPhone: Settings - General - About, look for "Available SIM." On Android: Settings - Connections - SIM Manager, look for a "Download SIM" or "Add eSIM" option.
Second, make sure your phone is unlocked. A phone bought on a carrier contract might be locked to that network. An eSIM will not install on a locked phone. Check Settings - Carrier Lock (iPhone) or SIM lock (Android). One call to your carrier fixes it. Do this before you leave home, not at the gate.
You also need a Wi-Fi connection for the install. Do it at home. Airport Wi-Fi is not where you want to troubleshoot this.
eSIMMY does not send QR codes by email. The whole process runs through WhatsApp.
You message eSIMMY. We ask which country or countries you are traveling to. We confirm coverage. You pick your plan length: 7, 15, or 30 days, one price for all 94 covered countries. You pay via a personal payment link. Your eSIM install link arrives in WhatsApp immediately after payment.
That install link is the only thing you need. Tap it.

Tap the install link we sent in WhatsApp. Your iPhone opens directly to Settings with your eSIM plan ready to add. Tap "Continue," then "Add Data Plan." Done. The eSIM installs in about 30 seconds.
If the link does not open Settings automatically, go there manually: Settings - Cellular - Add eSIM - Use QR Code. Have the QR code open on a second screen and scan it. Or choose "Enter Details Manually" and type the activation code. Both options work.
Two settings to check before you fly.
Data Roaming. Settings - Cellular, select the eSIMMY line, turn on Data Roaming. Without this, you land and get nothing. Turning on roaming for a travel eSIM is correct. The plan is prepaid. It does not touch your home bill.
Default data line. Settings - Cellular - Cellular Data, select the eSIMMY plan. Your home SIM keeps handling calls and texts. The eSIM handles data while you travel.
Tap the install link in WhatsApp. Most modern Android phones open directly to the eSIM install screen. Confirm the plan and tap "Activate."
If the direct link does not work on your device, go manually. On Pixel: Settings - Network and Internet - SIMs - Add eSIM. On Samsung: Settings - Connections - SIM Manager - Add eSIM. Scan the QR code from a second screen, or enter the activation code manually.
Once installed, set the eSIM as your mobile data line and turn on data roaming for that line. Same principle as iPhone.
Phone is offline. The eSIM profile downloads over the internet. Get on Wi-Fi and try again.
Phone is carrier-locked. If you bought on a carrier contract, especially in the US, the phone may reject any eSIM not from that carrier. One call to your operator to unlock the device, then try again.
The link or code was already used. eSIM profiles usually install exactly once. If you started the install and cancelled mid-way, the profile can get stuck. Message eSIMMY on WhatsApp and we will sort it. Takes a few minutes.
Date and time are set manually and are wrong. Unusual but real. Set your phone to automatic time and try again: Settings - General - Date and Time - Set Automatically (iPhone), or Settings - General Management - Date and Time (Android).
Install the eSIM at home. Activate it when you land.
Installing and activating are two different things. You install the profile on your home Wi-Fi before your trip. The plan sits dormant. When you land and turn off flight mode, your phone connects to the local network and the plan starts. eSIMMY counts days from first use, not from when you installed.
Install at home. Confirm it is sitting in your phone settings. Set data roaming on for that line. Then go. When you step off the plane, your phone already works.
If you are doing multiple countries on one trip, one eSIM for the whole route is cleaner than buying a separate plan per country.
Unlocked phone. Wi-Fi. Tap the install link from WhatsApp. Two taps to confirm. Set it as your data line. Turn on roaming for that line. Done before you board.
Two minutes. Your first hour abroad is for the place you came to see, not your phone settings.
