Most people brace for installing an eSIM like it's flashing firmware. It isn't. It's scanning a code and tapping "yes" a couple of times.

Before you start: two quick checks
Two boxes, both worth ticking before you touch a single setting.

Is your phone carrier-unlocked? This is the one that bites people. An eSIM will not install on a phone locked to a carrier — common if you bought it on a contract, especially in the US. One call to your operator fixes it. Do it now, not at the gate.
Install on iPhone
You'll need Wi-Fi and the QR code or install link from your provider.
- Open Settings → Cellular (or Mobile Service)
- Tap Add eSIM, then Use QR Code
- Point the camera at the QR code — or tap Enter Details Manually and paste the activation code
- Tap Continue, then wait while the plan downloads
- Label it something obvious — "Travel" works — so you don't mix it up with your home line

Install on Android (Pixel & Samsung)
Same idea, slightly different menu names. On stock Android and Pixel:
- Open Settings → Network & internet → SIMs
- Tap Add eSIM or Download a SIM instead

- Confirm the download and wait a few seconds
On Samsung Galaxy it's Settings → Connections → SIM manager → Add eSIM. From there it's the same: scan, confirm, done.
The step everyone forgets
Installing is not the same as switching on. Your eSIM is now sitting in your phone, dormant. To make sure it actually connects when you land, set two things while you're still home:
- Set the eSIM as your mobile data line (your home SIM keeps handling calls and texts)
- Turn on data roaming for that eSIM line — this sounds scary, but on a travel eSIM it's how the plan reaches the local network. It won't touch your home bill.
And that's the part nobody tells you: turning on roaming for a travel eSIM is correct, not dangerous. The plan is prepaid for the countries you chose. Roaming is just the switch that lets it talk to the towers abroad.
How long does it actually take?
About 90 seconds to install. Two minutes if you're entering the code by hand. The plan stays asleep until you reach your destination, then wakes up and connects on its own — usually within a minute of landing, once your phone finds a signal.

Three mistakes that ruin the 90 seconds
1. Installing offline. The eSIM downloads over the internet. No Wi-Fi or data means no install. Do it at home, not on the plane.
2. Scanning the QR code twice. Most eSIM codes install exactly once. If you scan it, delete the profile, then try again, it can refuse. Install it on the phone you're travelling with and leave it there.
3. Forgetting the roaming toggle. Everything installs perfectly, you land, and there's no signal — because the data-roaming switch for the eSIM line is off. Flip it before you fly and skip the airport panic.
