You land at Dubai International Airport. Terminal 3. It's 2 AM local time and your phone is in airplane mode. You need a ride. You need a hotel confirmation. You need to message someone that you arrived safely. The last thing you want to do is find a SIM card vending machine in a foreign terminal while dragging a carry-on behind you.

The UAE is one of the most visited countries on the planet. Dubai alone pulls in over 17 million tourists a year. And yet, a surprising number of travelers still arrive without a working data plan, assuming they'll figure it out on the ground. Some do. Most end up paying more than they should, or spending 40 minutes at a Etisalat counter when they could be in a taxi already.

The UAE has excellent mobile infrastructure. Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah - coverage is strong across all three. The networks running things are Etisalat (now rebranded as e&) and du. Both are solid.
