Suvarnabhumi Airport, 11pm. You've just landed after a nine-hour flight and you need a taxi app, a hotel confirmation, and a working map. The SIM card kiosk has a queue of thirty people. The guy in front of you is arguing about which plan covers Phuket. You could have avoided all of this.
Thailand is one of the most visited countries in Southeast Asia. Tens of millions of travelers pass through Bangkok every year, and almost all of them need mobile data from day one. An eSIM sorts that out before you even board your flight home. Here's what actually matters.
Thailand has excellent mobile infrastructure. Mobile coverage on the major tourist routes is solid, including Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Koh Samui, and the rail corridor between them. Rural areas and jungle islands have spottier coverage regardless of which provider you use, but for 90% of a normal Thailand itinerary, 4G LTE works fine.
The country also moves fast. You'll want Google Maps for tuk-tuks and Grab for ride-hailing. You'll want LINE for communicating with guesthouses. You'll want data the moment you clear immigration. Physical SIM cards work, but buying one at the airport means queuing, handing over your passport, waiting for activation, and sometimes discovering the plan doesn't cover your whole trip.
An eSIM skips all of that. You install it at home, it activates when you land, and you walk out of arrivals already connected.
A few things actually matter here.
Data volume. Thailand travel tends to be data-heavy. Navigation between islands, uploading photos, video calls home. A 10GB plan for two weeks is cutting it close if you stream or use maps constantly. 20GB is more comfortable. Some travelers doing a month-long trip go higher.
Validity period. Make sure the plan covers your whole trip. A 7-day eSIM that expires while you're still on Koh Tao is a problem. Buy a plan that matches your actual departure date, not just your arrival.
Network partner. In Thailand, AIS-backed plans tend to perform well across the country. If you're spending time in the north around Chiang Rai or Pai, check coverage maps before committing to a budget plan on a lesser network.
Hotspot support. If you travel with a laptop or want to share data with a travel partner, confirm the plan allows tethering. Not all do.

Also worth checking: is your phone carrier-locked? Some budget phones bought on contract are locked to one network and won't accept an eSIM from a different provider. Unlocking usually requires contacting your carrier.
Do it before you leave. You need a wifi connection to download the eSIM profile, and doing this at home is easier than doing it on airport wifi with a dead battery. The process takes about three minutes: tap the install link from WhatsApp, confirm the installation, set the eSIM as your data line. That's it.

One practical note: keep your home SIM active for calls and SMS. Most travelers run a dual-SIM setup where the eSIM handles all data in Thailand and the physical SIM stays dormant unless needed. This means you can still receive bank authentication codes from home without paying international rates.
A lot of people combine Thailand with neighboring countries. Bangkok to Siem Reap. Chiang Mai to Luang Prabang. Phuket to Singapore. If your trip crosses borders, a Thailand-only eSIM stops working the moment you leave.

Thailand travel without mobile data is genuinely harder than it needs to be. Grab doesn't work without data. Google Maps offline is unreliable in Bangkok traffic. Most guesthouses communicate via LINE or WhatsApp. You need connectivity, and you need it from the moment you land.
